Source: Watchdog suggests operators test Telegram muting equipment
MOSCOW, Mar 29 (PRIME) -- Major mobile operators have received a proposal from the Russian communications service to test on their networks equipment of the Deep Packet Inspection (DPI), which could be used among others to block messenger Telegram, a source at one of the operators told PRIME late Thursday.
“The communications watchdog suggested testing DPI equipment,” the source said, adding that the equipment was designed by local firm RDP.RU.
Media earlier reported that the authority started offering operators in March to test DPI from RDP.RU under a bill on protection of the Runet, the Russian-speaking segment of the Internet.
The watchdog said the equipment had shown its 100% effectiveness to mute Telegram, which is banned in the country for its reluctance to share the decoding keys with the Federal Security Service since April 2018.
